After the enormous distress which has ben caused by planting of some palm trees facing the Duomo of Milan. The genius Mr Salvini said not only the palm trees are african and therefore they are like refugees and need to be shipped back to their contry. (picture taken from the web)
Mr Salvini is the most clever person on earth, and when he was trying to use his phone to speak with Marine Le pain , he accidently stumbeld on this strange thing called wikipedia. Ohhh this invention must be Lombard, let see what they say about the Duomo.
Oh my god, the facade of the Duomo is not Italian, before 1745 there were no neo Gothic look to the Duomo but Lombard, horizontal style and not vertical Gothic style. The Duomo was built were there were 2 original roman churchesm, which were destroyed. Around 1330 they were destroyed to build the original Duomo. The Duomo was originally meant to be in bricks in The Lombard Gothic style. French and german architects were employed to make it look european, for political reasons, because the family in power then wanted to use the prestige as a way to gain power in what it is now Italy.
But these architects were fired after a short time since the workers, could not accept the way of working by foreign arcitects and hence a more horizontal and lombrad style was preferred to the vertical Gothic.
The rest of the gothic elements were more and more subdued, because the style was considered non italain, and a renaissance style was preferred more and more till 1745. In 1745 the look of the Duomo would be more Renaissance than Gothic. then there was a new idea to make it look gothic again. This project which was not really apreciated by the population was one of Napoleon, a french invader s obsession while he made himself king of italy- So Slvini realised this facade has to be demolished, it was realised to satisfy a french despot in a non italian style.
Salvini really is the new genious after, expoliting every terrorist attack to say his antieuropean ideas while he was paid by the european parliament, where he never showed to do the work he was appointed. Salvini realised that saying that the african palms to be removed is not enough nut the facade must be dismanteled imediately.
Well i am asperger and i m trying to use sarcasm. does it work? The palm is not african but asian and the trachycarpus fortunei arrived from asia few years later the facade of the duomo was completed.
And in the years 1800, there square had a neogothic plantation of palms in the square, which fitted fantastically with the neogothic facade.
To add to the stupidity, there was an attempt to burn 3 of the extreme resilient and cold hardy palms( they are planted in the south of sweden outdoors), which were eager to try a brazilian wax, in order to look more gay, oops more Milanese, and hence more fashion( the trachy trunk is a bit too straight , too hairy and not in a nerdy sexy way). The attempt to plant some plam and some banana trees and pink hydrangeas in order to remind of the exotist milan period. Shows a total lack of imagination, because the nostalgia is extremely badly executed , the palm are planted like potatos in rows, all with the same height. boring boring boring. But it reflects well what Milan is today. One of the most boring cities on earth, which managed to rival with Singabore, its status of the bore of the developped cities. In italian we use the word marchetta, when you behave like a hooker to gain something out of a situation.
This work to plant the palms was a marchetta for an american coffee multinational which used the scandal to gain popularity. and the country of decent coffe will have black water serving places instead of cafés.
I m not against marchette, marchette and politics and economics are essential. But i think there is nothing worst thgan a cheap marchetta, and this a cheap one. Which is a mirror of what Milan truly is: a city where innovation lacks since the 90 s, but with a terrible arrogance. The failure of the expo i another sign of Milan s lack of originality. But the real problem is not idiots like salvini, which a normal thing an idiot is an idiot, the project is a cheap marchetta, and it is a cheap marchetta. The real problem are the so called intelligentsia making all this uproar for such a triviality. The gothic style of the duomo does not go with the palm trees, the plants are alien , but they have been ar egular part of the Lombard gardens like azaleas and rhododendrons which are an emblem of the region ( and they originally from the same area). The square has been filled with ugly things for economicl reasons and nobody ever protested. but when you do a silly projected for once not payed by the taxpayers, all these bourgeois who think they got some good taste are flabbergasted and horrified. It is this very petit bourgeois mentallity which has ruined the city which was once a cultural city, not salvini, not the fascists. The so called élite are just des bourgeois gentil hommes. The play of Molière pictures a ridicule bourgeois which tries to ape, the manners and fashion of the aristocracy, without truly understanding what his behind the forms. In the same manner the milanese are just aping the once glamorous milan.
